Automobile Tires Do Expire, Are Your New Tires Really New?

By Miss Tina · January 28, 2010 · 0 Comments · 54 Views

The one bad thing about only sending joke emails to most of your contact list is that you never know when they are sending you something that is actually true, or important! I received an email from an old friend that I do not talk to often telling me to watch this video, often times I get emails that sound like serious warnings then end up being jokes or chain letters. This however, was something that I took very serious.

It was a video of an ABC program on tire safety. Yes, yes, sounds completely boring I know! Yet, it is something I never heard of before and could put all of our lives at risk. I never knew that automobile tires had a shelf life. I suppose most people would think that this is common sense, and I would agree. It is just something that I never really thought about before. Just two years ago I replaced my tires and only 8 short months later I was told they were in such bad condition that I needed to replace them again! I wonder if this video now is the explanation as to why my tires with a 30,000 warranty on them only lasted 3,000 miles.

ABC Reports on the life span of automobile tires!

I have included a link to the video above, which I do think that you should watch… in its entirety! However, if you do not have the time to I will give you a brief rundown of the warning. It has now been found out that many deaths each year are linked to companies selling tires that are up to 14 years old! What is the government standard you ask, 6 years max shelf life!

After sitting on shelves for years a tire may begin to dry out and then will break open at the tread randomly! In the video it shows a man who is expecting for his tire to rupture and he still was unable to keep control of his car. As always many different TV stations did “inside jobs” and tried to purchase tires from a wide variety of shops, many of them were sold tires that were more than 6 years old. The video teaches you the way that you can check your tires for its birthday and see if you are driving on overly dangerous tires, that you just purchased.

I know that this may seem as though there is nothing that shocking or that big of a deal. However, after watching the video you will see that many people died simply for purchasing tires that were past their shelf life! If you know a great place to get those discounted tires, maybe you should think twice before trusting them with your loved ones lives. You can always check the date on the tires to see if they are safe enough.
